PS 1010 Reflection
When I first chose to work into my particular problem area, I was excited to volunteer somewhere to help the homeless. I’ve never done that before but I have donated. I was excited to learn more about the issues that cause homelessness. And I also wanted to meet homeless people so I could put faces to a name, if that makes sense. I feel like actually seeing people and knowing how they act and what they look like will create a better relationship between the problem of homelessness and I. The thing that surprised me is learning about Utah’s approach to decreasing the amount of chronically homeless people in their state. In a time span of 10 years, they decreased it by 92%.
I plan on continuing to volunteer at the DRMM soup kitchen, because I really enjoyed the atmosphere and the message that they provided. But to switch it up, I will bring more family with me, because I think it’s extremely important for everyone to help homeless people and to see how they live their lives. Sometimes we get so caught up in our privileged lives and we forget that there are people who are less fortunate and still getting by. My biggest realization was finding out that my problems are completely small compared to what homeless people go through.
When it came to group work, I was lucky. My group consisted of 5 amazing and cooperative people and we all helped each other. One pro of having group work is having other people to help and work with to complete a project. When it’s a project that I have to submit, it becomes to get a little stressful. But when it comes to group work, everyone works together to help each other and I think that is amazing. The only con I could think of when it comes to group work is not having enough time in between our schedules to meet up and get work done. Keep in mind that we are all mostly working college students, so it’s hard to find time in between the time we are at Wayne State.
This course and project has taught me how to become more organized and improve my time management. I used to write a lot of my essays the day of or night before it was due. Now I write them a couple of days before they are due. This is small progress but hey it’s better than my previous procrastination habits. Another thing I learned about was of course, the homelessness. We hear about them all the time and while I am in the suburbs, I don’t see any homeless people that often. Learning more about them has made me want to volunteer more and help them out more. I also want to point out that homeless people can be some of the sweetest people ever if you give them a chance. Nothing in this world will get better if you don’t let them have a chance to show how kind they can actually be.
PS 1010 has done me great justice and I would redo it all over again. I loved this class and I would give it a solid 10/10.
